01 Steel elements light up Chengdu Universiade
On the evening of 28th July, over the Dong’an Lake Stadium in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, the fireworks were brilliant and the sacred fire was burning, and the 31st World University Summer Games kicked off under the attention of all the people. In this youthful event, the power of steel shines, repeatedly appearing out of the circle, showing the strength and commitment of the big country steel.
Dong’an Lake Sports Park -
The total amount of steel used is comparable to four Eiffel Towers.
Chengdu for this year’s Universiade has built 13 new venues, the most notable of which is the core venue of the Games, the opening ceremony of the main stadium location - Dong’an Lake Sports Park. Dong’an Lake Sports Park contains "one game and three stadiums" (40,000-seat Class A stadium called "Flying Saucer", 18,000-seat multi-purpose stadium, 5,000-seat swimming and diving hall and integrated small ball court), and also contains the Chengdu Universiade Museum, the main torch tower and other landscapes. . According to statistics, the total amount of steel used in the main steel structure of Dong’an Lake Sports Park is about 27,500 tonnes, equivalent to the amount of steel used in 4 Eiffel Towers.
Among them, the 40,000-seat Grade A stadium located on the shore of Dong’an Lake has a total construction area of about 120,000 square metres, with a building height of about 50 metres, which is a globally rare circular stadium, and from afar it looks like a silver flying saucer about to set sail, with a sense of the future and a sense of full of science and technology. The main structure of the "flying saucer" consists of a concrete structure and a roof steel structure, and the steel structure uses about 14,000 tonnes of steel, which is equivalent to the amount of steel used in two Eiffel Towers.
Not only the volume is amazing, "flying saucer" construction process also applied a number of "black technology". For example, in the construction process of "flying saucer", BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology is applied comprehensively in the simulation of building construction, layout simulation, deepening design of complex nodes, simulation of construction plan, visual presentation, 4D progress simulation and analysis, etc., which can provide a strong guarantee for the project management, and realize the visualization of key and difficult technical simulation and efficient communication. The project can achieve visualisation of key and difficult technical simulation, and efficient communication. For example, due to the many complex nodes and complicated intersections, the steel structure of the "flying saucer" roof is constructed in the way of "ground assembly + unit lifting + high-altitude docking". Such a construction method is equivalent to the main body of the steel structure is divided into different sizes of "blocks" (modules), after the ground welding assembly, the use of large-scale crawler cranes will be lifting the module in place, welded and fixed by professional workers.
The main torch tower of the Universiade

At about 21:40 on 28 July, the 31-metre-high main torch tower of the Chengdu Universiade was lit, and the blazing flame lit up the night sky. This has attracted the attention of the world’s main torch tower project construction of the most important, the most technically difficult tower base, the required steel all by Chongqing Iron and Steel to provide.
Chengdu Universiade main torch tower tower height of 31 metres, meaning "31st World University Summer Games". The main structure of the main torch tower is a diamond-shaped space cross grid, consisting of three parts: the base, body and crown. The design of the tower is derived from the "Sun God Bird", and the 12 spiralling curves are the artistic expression of the 12 rays of the sun in the "Sun God Bird". When the flame is lit, the 12 beams of light spiral upwards and gather in the "sun flint" (the crown of the tower), symbolising the cohesion of power.
The main torch tower project is not only a key project of the Chengdu Universiade, but also a new landmark building in Chengdu, which has very high requirements for steel performance and size.
After receiving the project order, Chongqing Iron & Steel immediately started the product design and production work, and after a number of production processes, including demand identification, composition and process programme design, production process monitoring, sampling and testing, the products were finally delivered on schedule, and the stability of product quality was unanimously recognised by the project contractors.
